HWNT San Antonio is a professional association with a mission to promote the advancement of women in public, corporate and civic life through education, personal and professional development.

College Scholarship Opportunities-Apply Now

College Scholarships are available to Hispanic women graduating from high school in 2013 or currently attending a college or university. In order to qualify for the scholarship, applicants must attend at least three educational seminars from our Latinas in Progress Program (LIPP).

Topic I: Assertiveness Training: Servant Leadership for Women
Presenter: Linda Cross, Asst. Director of University Relations, Baptist University of the Americas

Linda Cross is  a public relations consultant, professional writer, ordained minister commissioned by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) as the Latin America-Caribbean Advocate for Leadership Development. In this capacity, she is developing and facilitating a professional development network among Hispanic Baptist seminaries, pastors associations and churches and CBF churches, volunteers and partner institutions. She serves as Assistant Director of University Relations, Baptist University of the Americas, San Antonio. She earned an MA in Theology and a BA in Religion and Radio-Television-Film from Baylor University.

Topic II: Latinas as Leaders: Culture and Civicism

Presenter: Teresa Martinez, Director of Learning Resources, Baptist University of the Americas

Teresa B. Martinez has been the Director of Learning Resources at Baptist University of the Americas in San Antonio, Texas since 2006.  She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Texas at El Paso, and Master of Science in Library Science from the University of North Texas.  She serves as a library evaluator for the Association of Biblical Higher Education accrediting association, and her library serves as a model for small libraries seeking accreditation from ABHE. She mentors young women at Baptist University of the Americas as part of the Latina Leadership Institute and serves as a mentor to teenage girls at South San High School through her involvement with Communities in Schools.  In her free time she enjoys reading, promoting the arts, and breathing fresh air.

Topic III: Keys to a Successful Journey
Presenter: Elizabeth Tamez Méndez, Assoc. Director of Student Services and Enrollment Management, Baptist University of the Americas

Elizabeth Tamez Méndez is passionate about seeing others develop their upmost potential in life, especially young people! She has a BS in Architecture, an MA in Interior Design, a Certificate in Urban Youth Ministry, a Certificate in Latina Leadership, and is currently a PhD candidate in Leadership. She is founder and CEO of NG3 (Nueva Generación3) a non-profit organization focused on promoting the development of young people and the adults involved in their lives. She is an international speaker, trainer, consultant, and published author on the topics of Leadership and Youth Development. Her career journey has allowed her to be an architectural designer of high-rise buildings, adjunct professor, and student services administrator. She is an ordained minister with more than 20 years of service experience.

Topic: Weaving Life into a Career-Personal Meaning & Journey
Presenter: Cecilia McGaw, Senior Associate, John Paul Mitchell Systems & Owner of Focus Salons

Cecilia is a senior associate with John Paul Mitchell Systems and a successful Focus Salon owner since January 2000. Originally from Mexico, she is one of the few Spanish-speaking platform artists for Paul Mitchell. Cecilia has a passion for sharing her 12 years of business and technical knowledge with those who have a desire to start or grow their own businesses. She served as a key panelist at one of the most successful business development programs for Latina Style Business Series, a nationwide program. She attributes much of her success to God’s grace and protection going all the way back to her teenage pregnancy. In September 2012 she established T.E.A (truth endures always) Time, a bible study for women who desire to grow and strengthen their walk with God. Her advice to other women; “Remember who you are, even when life is hard, it is in these hard places that a new strength in us is exposed.
